  11. The reason for me (Thomas) for no longer supporting FastIEEE is that the
  12. 45.xx releases of the math libraries that come with Os 3.9 have FastIEEE
  13. support build-in and hence don't require this patch anymore.

  18. FastIEEE replaces the math library functions, i.e. entries of the 
  19. mathieeesing/doub/bas/trans.libraries by routines which are more adequate for
  20. a 68040 or 68060 processor. The advantage of the new routines is that they
  21. no longer use FPU instructions that have to be emulated in software for the
  22. 68040 or 68060 processor. Hence, these routines go no longer thru an
  23. "emulator trap", are therefore more multitasking friendly and also faster.
  24. Some measurements have shown that the new IEEE routines provided by this
  25. program are approximately 1.5 times faster.
  26.  
  27. NOTE THAT THIS MAKES ONLY A DIFFERENCE IF PROGRAMS REALLY USE THE MATHIEEE
  28. LIBRARIES.
  29.  
  30. However, these procedures do not re-implement all the mathematical algorithms.
  31. Instead, they make use of the "FPSP" routines which are already part of the
  32. 68040.library or 68060.library. Therefore, a special 68040 or 68060 library 
  33. is required which makes these routines available. Currently, the only 
  34. 68040 library that offers this feature is my 68040.library from the MuLib 
  35. archive. The same applies to the 060 and the MuLib 68060.library. Both can
  36. be found in the Mu680x0Libs.lha archive on Aminet.

  38. FastIEEE fixes, too, some bugs in the mathieee libraries. IEEEDPCmp() is 
  39. broken and orders some numbers "the wrong way". This fix is also available 
  40. separately. IEEEDPPow() and IEEESPPow() are broken and return non-sense for 
  41. special arguments.

  43. 40.2 and up also fix the broken FPU initialization of the v37 math libraries,
  44. and repair the broken workbench startup code of the 40.1. Thanks, Gunther!
